How much does SEO
cost in 2026?
Published ranges by pricing model, what actually moves the number, and where a real agency's prices sit inside it.
SEO costs 8,000–60,000 NOK per month on a retainer in the Nordics in 2026, which is roughly 1,500–5,000 USD internationally. Hourly consulting runs 800–2,000 NOK (100–300 USD), and a one-off audit or defined project runs 10,000–50,000 NOK. Small local businesses sit at the bottom of that range and enterprise programmes run past 100,000 NOK a month. Our own retainers are 12,900–49,900 NOK a month.

What actually moves the price
Two sites with the same problem can differ by a factor of five in cost. Four things explain almost all of that spread.
- Site size. Forty pages and forty thousand pages are not the same engagement, even when the symptom is identical.
- Competition. Finance, legal and iGaming demand more of everything; a local trade business ranks on a fraction of the effort.
- Your own capacity. If your team cannot implement, the agency does it, and the fee rises to match.
- Markets and languages. Each additional market is closer to a new engagement than to a percentage uplift.
Retainer or project?
A retainer suits ongoing work where the compounding matters — content, authority and continuous technical fixes. A fixed-price project suits a defined problem with a known end: an audit, a migration, a tracking rebuild. If you are not sure the channel will pay for itself, start with a project and a known total cost rather than a twelve-month commitment.
The percentage-of-spend model
Common in paid media and occasionally offered in SEO. It charges 10–20 percent of what you spend, which means the agency earns more the more you spend regardless of whether it works. A flat fee puts the agency's incentive on the same side as yours. We charge a flat fee.
What a fair price looks like
Below roughly 8,000 NOK a month, you are buying a few hours, and SEO does not compound on a few hours. Above 60,000 NOK a month you should expect a named senior team, work shipped into your systems rather than recommended, and reporting tied to revenue. Anywhere in between, the honest test is whether the agency will tell you the number before the meeting.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much should I expect to pay for SEO?
For a small local business, 8,000–15,000 NOK a month is realistic. For established B2B or growing e-commerce, 20,000–35,000 NOK. For multiple markets or a genuinely competitive niche, 50,000 NOK and up. Our own tiers are 12,900, 24,900 and 49,900 NOK a month.
How much do agencies charge for SEO services?
Three models cover most of the market: monthly retainers at 8,000–60,000 NOK, hourly consulting at 800–2,000 NOK, and one-off audits or projects at 10,000–50,000 NOK. Roughly one agency in four publishes any of those numbers on its own site.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Below about 5,000 NOK a month you are buying two or three hours, which is not enough to move anything that compounds. It is usually better to spend the same money once on a proper audit and implement it yourself than to spread it thinly over twelve months.
How long before SEO pays for itself?
First movement in the data at eight to twelve weeks, clear business impact typically at six to twelve months. If a niche is uncompetitive it can be faster; if there is a lot of technical debt in the way it will be slower.
Can I do SEO on my own?
For a small local site, often yes. The technical basics, a well-kept Google Business Profile and pages matching real queries will take you a long way. It stops scaling when the site gets large, the market gets competitive, or the fixes need developer time you do not have.
